More than 12 million are estimated to have experienced different kinds of abuse due to human trafficking. In the Philippines, more and more residents put themselves at risk of human trafficking as they continue to leave the provinces in search of jobs and fortune.
This Thursday (May 5) in “Krusada,” Karen Davila will give a face to human trafficking by sharing us the stories of six Filipinos that survived it. Find out how they fell prey to illegal recruiters and how they fought back to save themselves from further abuse.
Illegal recruiters use trust and poverty in convincing Filipinos to leave their homes for greener pastures in the city. Sadly, for the victims, this dream of a better life has put their lives in danger.
For example, Lisa, was recruited in Marinduque to become a nanny in Manila when she was just 18 years old, but was sent to a beerhouse instead.
Like her, Patty, Tricia, Daisy, Rose, and Lenlen were also tricked into taking jobs that would violate them. Fortunately, through the help of the Visayan Forum Foundation Inc., they got their lives back on track.
Karen hopes that her report will help spare even more women and children from the evils of human trafficking. She believes that it is not enough to just hope for the goodness of an employer. Instead, there should be a system mandated by law that will ensure that no aspirant will be violated, whatever occupation he or she is applying for.
